Agentic Commerce
What is Agentic Commerce?
Traditional ecommerce is reactive: the store waits for the shopper to search, filter, and navigate. Agentic commerce is proactive: AI agents monitor shopper behavior, form a view of what the shopper needs, and act on it — opening a conversation, building a recommendation, surfacing a product — before the shopper asks.
McKinsey's State of Fashion 2026 describes agentic commerce in three horizons: AI in discovery (how shoppers find brands via AI assistants), agentic on-site search (conversational discovery on brand websites), and agent-first purchasing (AI agents that make buying decisions on behalf of shoppers based on their known preferences). Each horizon is more consequential than the last.
For brands, agentic commerce changes the fundamental question from "how do we optimize our product pages?" to "how do we make our store and catalog AI-ready?" Brands whose inventory is well-structured, occasion-tagged, and conversationally accessible will perform better in an agentic commerce world than brands with identical inventory but a static catalog.
Why Agentic Commerce matters for fashion brands
AI-referred traffic to retail sites grew 393% in Q1 2026. Shoppers increasingly start fashion discovery in an AI conversation and arrive at a brand store with a brief already formed. Brands whose stores can continue that conversation convert this traffic. Brands that reset to a product grid lose it.
