Measurement
Cart Abandonment Rate
Cart abandonment rate is the percentage of shoppers who add at least one item to their cart but leave without completing a purchase — in fashion ecommerce, typically 70-80%.
What this means
Cart abandonment is often treated as a checkout-flow or payment-friction problem, and some of it is — unexpected shipping costs, forced account creation, a clunky payment form. But in fashion specifically, a large share of abandonment happens before checkout friction is even relevant: the shopper added an item, then reconsidered whether it was actually the right choice. Distinguishing between logistics-driven abandonment (fixable with checkout UX improvements) and decision-driven abandonment (fixable with better styling support) is important for prioritizing where to invest.
Why it matters for fashion brands
Cart abandonment is rarely a payment friction problem in fashion — it's typically a decision problem. Shoppers who add an item and remove it again, or who leave a cart idle, are uncertain about the purchase. AI stylists that engage at these moments with outfit completion or styling help address the uncertainty rather than the logistics.
