Conversational Commerce
What is Conversational Commerce?
The term was coined by Chris Messina in 2015 to describe commerce happening through messaging apps. In 2026, it describes a broader shift: the replacement of filter-and-browse interfaces with natural language conversation as the primary discovery mechanic.
Conversational commerce works because natural language is how humans actually think about fashion needs. Shoppers don't think "women's kurta set, cotton, size M, under ₹5,000, festive occasion." They think "something for Diwali that isn't too heavy." The first formulation is product-database language. The second is human language. Conversational commerce interfaces accept the second and translate it to the first — so shoppers never have to.
The performance differential between conversational and non-conversational ecommerce is documented: AI-referred shoppers who have had a conversational interaction before arriving at a store converted 42% better than other traffic in March 2026, per Adobe Digital Insights. Shoppers who complete a conversational outfit interaction on-site convert at 3-4x the rate of unassisted browsers.
Why Conversational Commerce matters for fashion brands
Fashion purchase decisions are inherently conversational. They involve occasion, taste, budget, what the shopper already owns, and what the event requires. These are conversational variables — they require dialogue to resolve. Brands that give shoppers a way to have that conversation convert more of the 98% who currently leave without buying.
