Intent Recognition

Intent recognition is the AI capability that identifies what a shopper is trying to accomplish — find a specific product, build an outfit, compare options, get styling advice — from their natural language input.

What this means

The same words can carry very different intents. "What goes with this?" could mean a shopper wants complete-the-look suggestions, or it could mean they're asking a styling question in the abstract. "Show me something similar" could mean a similar product, a similar price point, or a similar occasion fit. Intent recognition resolves this ambiguity by considering the full context of the conversation and the shopper's session. Accurate intent recognition determines which capability the AI assistant should invoke: search, outfit assembly, comparison, or general styling advice. Getting intent wrong produces a technically correct but unhelpful response — the assistant answers a question the shopper didn't ask.

Why it matters for fashion brands

Intent recognition is what separates AI stylists from keyword search. The same words can carry different intents, and intent recognition determines which service the AI provides in response. Brands whose AI assistant consistently recognizes intent correctly feel dramatically more helpful to shoppers than one that frequently misreads the request.
