Google AI Mode Checkout in Canada: What Shopify Fashion Brands Do Now

On November 4, 2026 Google switched on direct checkout for Canadian shoppers in AI Mode and Gemini, including select Shopify merchants. What it means for fashion brands and what to do this week.

Quick answer: On November 4, 2026, Google began rolling out direct checkout to shoppers in Canada inside AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app, powered by its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), according to Google Canada’s announcement. Launch retailers are lululemon, Shoppers Drug Mart, Simons and select Shopify merchants; shoppers pay with Google Pay and the retailer stays the seller of record. Per the Shopify Help Center, stores that sell to Canada can qualify if they have a Merchant Center account, Shopify Catalog-eligible products and completed store policies, and direct checkout is on by default.

A shopper in Canada can now ask Gemini for a warm wool coat, see your product and buy it without visiting your site. Here is what changed and the five checks to run this week.

What Google launched on November 4

Google switched on agentic checkout for Canadian shoppers in AI Mode and the Gemini app, starting with four retail groups. The announcement, written by Sabrina Geremia, Vice President and Country Managing Director of Google Canada, says direct checkout is “rolling out starting today” and lets shoppers buy while they research, paying with payment methods and shipping details saved in Google Wallet.

  • Who sells at launch: lululemon, Shoppers Drug Mart, Simons and “select Shopify merchants”.

  • Who owns the order: “Retailers remain the seller of record,” and retailers can customize the integration.

  • What comes next: Google says it will add capabilities such as applying loyalty rewards “in the coming months”, and that “starting next year” it will broaden access through a simplified UCP integration inside Google Merchant Center.

  • Why Google says it matters: Google cites its own research that 59% of holiday shoppers in Canada plan to use an AI tool to help them shop this season.

UCP is the open standard Google launched earlier in 2026 so agents, retailers and payment providers share one way to handle discovery, purchase and post-purchase steps.

Does this affect your Shopify fashion brand?

Yes, if you sell to customers in Canada, the United States or Australia. Shopify’s help page for Google AI Mode and Gemini says your store can be based anywhere, but “You must sell to customers in the United States, Canada, or Australia”, and that direct checkout is rolling out gradually in those three countries. Canadian shoppers who do not have it yet can still find your products and are sent to your online store to buy.

Shopify’s Mani Fazeli told Search Engine Journal that eligible merchants selling into Canada can join “with zero extra work”, but only if four requirements are met:

  • A valid Google Merchant Center account that meets Google’s requirements.

  • Products that are eligible for Shopify Catalog.

  • Agreement to the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.

  • Terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy completed in Settings > Policies.

Fashion feels this more than most categories. Shoppers ask about fit, fabric, warmth and occasion, and the assistant can only answer from your feed and product data; with checkout inside the chat, your product page may never get to fill the gaps.

What to do this week

Run these five checks before Canadian holiday traffic peaks.

1. Confirm your Merchant Center connection

Products must be in Merchant Center to be discoverable. If you use the Google & YouTube sales channel, turn on “Automatically sync products” and “Automatically sync shipping information” in its product feed section. If you send a third-party feed, Shopify says no extra setup is needed, but check that the feed includes your Canadian shipping.

2. Make your policies match everywhere

Shopify asks merchants to keep return and refund policies up to date in Shopify so they match Merchant Center. Holiday return windows are where mismatches creep in; our walkthrough of Merchant Center holiday return policy settings covers the fields.

3. Decide whether to keep direct checkout on

Direct checkout is on by default. To change it, Shopify’s steps are: Sales channels > Agentic, turn off “Allow Shopify to manage for me”, click Google AI Mode and Gemini, switch Direct checkout on or off, and save. If it is off, shoppers are redirected to your store to finish. Brands selling made-to-measure or pre-order items may prefer the redirect until they have tested the flow.

4. Fill the product facts an assistant needs

For apparel, assistants need size range, fit, fabric, warmth, colour family, occasion and care in titles, descriptions and feed attributes. Shopify also asks merchants to put any required legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters of a product description. Our catalog guide for AI shopping assistants has a fashion attribute checklist.

5. Check Canadian delivery promises

Shoppers pay with shipping details saved in Google Wallet, so your Canadian shipping rates and holiday cut-offs need to be right in both Shopify and Merchant Center. See our Canada and Australia Christmas shipping cut-offs for carrier dates.

What is still unclear

Google has not dated the Merchant Center UCP integration beyond “next year”, or said how direct checkout orders are reported in Google Ads or interact with Shopping and Performance Max campaigns, gaps Search Engine Journal also flags. Loyalty rewards are not live yet. Watch Shopify’s Agentic dashboard, which shows AI sales and sessions, for AI Mode orders.

Where Elara fits

An agent can sell one product in a chat, but it cannot style the shopper who lands on your site, and it only recommends what your data says. Elara for Commerce covers both: the on-site AI stylist answers “what do I wear this with?”, builds complete looks from your catalog and lets shoppers try on the full outfit, while Elara Spotlight (early access) writes occasion, fit and style attributes back into your Shopify metafields and Google feed, with your approval, so assistants have the facts to match on. Assistants still decide what to recommend; Spotlight makes sure the facts are there.
