New research guide: The Confidence Economy, how AI is changing fashion commerce.
Last updated: November 7, 2026
Quick answer: Units per transaction (UPT) is the number of items sold divided by the number of orders. In Shopify, divide Ordered items by Total orders for the same date range in your analytics, or check Items per order in the POS Daily Sales report. Fashion brands usually raise UPT by pairing pieces on the product page, selling complete looks, offering multipacks of basics, and styling shoppers in real time.
What UPT is and how to calculate it in Shopify

UPT answers a simple question: when someone checks out, how many pieces do they take home? The formula is items sold ÷ orders over the same period.
Example (illustrative numbers): if your store sold 1,200 items across 800 orders last month, your UPT is 1,200 ÷ 800 = 1.5.
In Shopify, there are two quick ways to find the inputs:
Online store: in Analytics, open the Ordered items over time report and the Total orders figure for the same date range, then divide the first by the second.
Retail: the Shopify POS Daily Sales report shows Items per order, which Shopify describes as the average number of items in a customer order.
UPT sits inside average order value. AOV equals UPT multiplied by average unit retail (the average price per item sold). So you can raise AOV by selling pricier items or by selling more of them per order, and UPT is the lever that does not ask shoppers to trade up.
Why UPT matters, and when it misleads
For fashion brands, a higher UPT usually means shoppers are buying outfits instead of single pieces. It spreads shipping and acquisition cost across more items, and a shopper who buys a full look has more reasons to come back for the next one.
But UPT can flatter you. Shoppers who order the same item in two or three sizes and return the rest push gross UPT up while adding nothing to revenue. Measure net UPT, after returns, alongside gross UPT. If gross UPT rises and net UPT does not, the lift is coming from bracketing, not outfits. Read our guide to size bracketing.
4 ways to raise UPT for fashion ecommerce
1. Pair it on the product page

The simplest move is to show what goes with the item a shopper is already looking at. Shopify’s free Search & Discovery app lets you set complementary products manually, up to 10 per product. Compatible themes show them in a Complementary products block on the product page, and only products with inventory above 0 appear.
Pick pairings a stylist would pick: the trousers that match the blazer, the belt that suits the dress. Generic rows of similar items tend to compete with the sale instead of adding to it. Why “you might also like” widgets hurt fashion AOV.
2. Sell the complete look

Styled outfit pages and lookbooks give shoppers permission to buy the whole outfit. Let them add every piece in one tap, and keep sizes selectable per piece so the look does not create returns. How to build complete-look bundles.
3. Offer multipacks of basics

Tees, socks, underwear and tanks are natural multipack products. Shopify’s Bundles app supports fixed bundles and multipacks with up to 30 components. A few things to know before you set it up:
Bundle inventory is tracked overall, not by location.
The bundle price does not update automatically when a component price changes, so review it whenever you reprice.
Bundles do not appear in Search & Discovery filters.
4. Style the shopper in real time

Product-page pairings are fixed. A shopper who wants an outfit for a December wedding needs something more flexible. An AI stylist like Elara asks about the occasion, then builds complete looks from your catalog that the shopper can add to cart together.
Industry benchmark: brands using AI shopping assistants see about 25% higher AOV (Rep AI, 2025). Treat it as a reference point, not a promise, and measure your own lift.
How to measure whether UPT really went up
Set a baseline: record gross UPT, net UPT and AOV for the 4 weeks before any change.
Change one thing at a time so you know which lever moved the number.
Measure net of returns, since size bracketing inflates gross UPT.
Use a holdout where you can: show the new feature to some shoppers and not others, then compare.

FAQ
What is units per transaction (UPT)?
UPT is the average number of items in an order: total items sold divided by total orders for the same period.
How do I calculate UPT in Shopify?
Divide Ordered items by Total orders for the same date range in Shopify Analytics. For retail, the POS Daily Sales report shows Items per order directly.
What is a good UPT for a fashion brand?
It depends on your category and price point. A basics brand and an occasion-wear brand will look very different. Your own baseline is the most useful benchmark, so aim to raise net UPT month over month.
What is the difference between UPT and AOV?
UPT counts items per order. AOV measures money per order. AOV equals UPT multiplied by average unit retail, so UPT is one of the two levers behind AOV.
Does a higher UPT increase returns?
It can, if the extra items come from size bracketing. Outfits and multipacks bought in one size tend to be kept, while duplicates in several sizes tend to come back. Track net UPT after returns to tell the difference.
