After the Shipping Cutoff: How Shopify Fashion Brands Can Sell Gift Cards for Christmas and Hanukkah 2026
When physical gifts stop arriving on time, switch to e-gifts. 2026 carrier cutoff dates, Shopify scheduled gift cards, US, UK and EU gift card rules, and merchandising tips.
Mehul Agarwal, Founder & CEO

Quick answer: Once the last safe shipping date passes (17 December 2026 for USPS Ground Advantage, 18 December for UK Royal Mail 2nd Class), switch your holiday merchandising to digital gift cards. Shopify includes gift cards on all plans, delivers them instantly by email, and on current Online Store 2.0 themes lets shoppers add a recipient, a message and a future "send on" date, so a gift card bought on 23 December can land in an inbox on Christmas morning. Before you promote them, check the rules: in the US, gift cards generally cannot expire within five years under federal law, and California requires cash redemption of balances under $15 from April 2026. In the UK, expiry dates are allowed if they are clear at purchase.
Hanukkah begins at sundown on Friday, 4 December 2026 and ends on 12 December, and Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year. For a fashion brand, the last week before Christmas is a strange one: demand is still high, but every physical order now carries the risk of arriving late. A well-run gift card push turns those late shoppers into January customers instead of December refund requests.
This guide covers the cutoff dates, the Shopify features worth turning on, the legal basics in the US, UK and EU, and how to merchandise gift cards like a fashion brand rather than a payment form. If you have not set your delivery-promise dates yet, start with our US holiday shipping cutoffs playbook.
The cutoff calendar: when to switch to gift cards
Carriers publish last recommended mailing dates for Christmas delivery. For 2026, the official dates include:

USPS (contiguous US): Ground Advantage, Thursday 17 December; Priority Mail, Friday 18 December; Priority Mail Express, Saturday 19 December.
Royal Mail (UK inland): 2nd Class, Friday 18 December; Tracked 48, Saturday 19 December; 1st Class and Tracked 24, Monday 21 December; Special Delivery Guaranteed, Wednesday 23 December. Royal Mail says these are "subject to change."
UPS and FedEx: check each carrier's own holiday page for 2026 dates before you publish them; they vary by service and transit time.
Your own cutoff is earlier than the carrier's, because it has to include your pick, pack and dispatch time. A practical pattern is to start featuring gift cards in navigation and email two or three days before your last guaranteed-delivery date, and make them the main call to action from the day after it.
What Shopify gift cards can do

Available on all plans. Shopify announced in April 2020 that it was enabling gift cards "on all Shopify plans indefinitely," and its current help pages list no plan restriction.
Instant digital delivery. Gift cards are "fulfilled automatically when an order is paid," and the customer receives an email, with an optional Apple Wallet pass. Shopify notes gift cards in medium- or high-risk orders need manual fulfillment, so check your order risk queue daily in late December.
Recipient, message and scheduled send. On Shopify's free Online Store 2.0 themes (such as Dawn and Horizon, version 9.0.0 or later), shoppers can enter a recipient email, name, message and a "Send on" date. Shopify says scheduled gift cards are sent "approximately between 4:00 am to 10:00 am in the purchasing customer's timezone." This does not work on vintage themes.
Denominations. Gift cards are digital products with a maximum value of $10,000 or equivalent.
Expiry settings. By default, Shopify gift cards "don't expire because it's illegal in some countries for gift cards to expire." If you add expiry, Shopify's default is five years, and it tells merchants to check their local rules.
In-store gift receipts. Shopify POS can print a gift receipt that "doesn't contain the amount spent," for full orders only.
The legal basics, by market
This is general information, not legal advice. Gift card law varies by state and country, so confirm the rules where your customers are.
United States
The CFPB's Regulation E (12 CFR 1005.20) says a store gift card cannot be sold with an expiration date unless the funds last at least five years from issue or from the last time money was loaded. The expiry date, or the fact that funds do not expire, must be disclosed. Dormancy or inactivity fees are only allowed after a year with no activity, must be disclosed, and are limited to one per month. Loyalty, award and promotional cards are excluded, but must say so on the card.
States can go further. California generally bans expiry dates and service fees on gift certificates, and from 1 April 2026 the threshold for mandatory cash redemption rose from $10 to $15, as law firm Morgan Lewis reported. Unredeemed balances may also fall under state unclaimed property (escheat) laws, which differ widely, so ask your accountant how they apply to you.
United Kingdom
There is no statutory minimum expiry period for gift cards in the UK. Which? explains that "expiry dates are allowed as long as the person buying the voucher was made aware of this at the time of purchase," and that important terms should be shown at the point of purchase. If you set an expiry, put it on the product page, in the order confirmation and in the gift card email.
European Union
There are no common EU rules on how long vouchers must be valid, according to the European Consumer Centre Ireland, and individual countries set their own. Ireland, for example, requires gift vouchers to be valid for at least five years under its Gift Vouchers Act 2019. If you sell gift cards into the EU, the simplest approach is Shopify's default: no expiry.
Accounting, briefly
Shopify's own retail guide notes that a gift card's value "stays on the balance sheet as a liability" until it is redeemed, and that unused balances (breakage) can be recognised in proportion to redemptions under accounting rules. Talk to your accountant before you forecast December revenue that includes gift card sales.
How to merchandise gift cards like a fashion brand
A plain "Gift card" product with four denominations is easy to ignore. A few changes make it feel like a gift rather than a fallback.

Design it for the occasion. Create holiday and Hanukkah card designs as separate product images, so a shopper can choose the one that fits the person.
Pair it with a story. Add a short line that suggests what the amount buys: "enough for a knit and a scarf from our winter edit." Use your own real prices.
Make the schedule visible. Tell shoppers in the product description that they can choose a delivery date, so it arrives on the morning they want.
Put it where late shoppers look. Add gift cards to your holiday gift guide, main navigation, cart drawer and abandoned-checkout emails from your cutoff date onward. Our guide to building a holiday gift guide on Shopify covers placement.
Plan for January. Gift card recipients arrive in January with money to spend and no product in mind. Prepare a new-arrivals edit and size help so their first visit converts, and remember that holiday returns and exchanges will land at the same time.
Keep promotional cards separate. If you give away bonus cards ("spend $150, get a $25 card"), label them as promotional, with the expiry and terms on the card, because federal rules treat them differently from purchased gift cards.
FAQ
