Hanukkah 2026 for Shopify Fashion Brands: Delivery Dates, Eight-Night Gift Edits and Respectful Marketing
Hanukkah 2026 runs 4 to 12 December, three weeks before Christmas. When first-night gifts must arrive, how to merchandise for eight nights, and how to market it with care.

Quick answer: Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday 4 December and ends at nightfall on Saturday 12 December, according to Hebcal. That is three weeks before Christmas, so the usual Christmas shipping cutoffs are too late for first-night gifts. For Shopify fashion brands, the playbook is simple: promise and message a "delivered by Thursday 3 December" date for first-night gifts, build a gift edit that works across eight nights rather than one big gift, and market the holiday accurately and respectfully, as its own occasion rather than a footnote to Christmas.
Many fashion brands run one "holiday" campaign that quietly assumes everyone celebrates on 25 December. Hanukkah does not fit that calendar. In 2026 it starts on 4 December and falls across two Shabbats, which affects when gifts need to arrive and when your customers are likely to be online. Getting the dates and tone right is a simple way to serve these customers well, and to stand out from brands that treat Hanukkah as an afterthought.
This guide covers the 2026 dates and what they mean for delivery promises, how to merchandise for eight nights, and how to market the holiday with care. Dates come from Hebcal, the Jewish calendar service; customs are drawn from Chabad.org and The Old Farmer's Almanac.
The 2026 dates and what they mean for delivery

Hebcal lists Chanukah 2026 (5787) as follows:
First night: sundown on Friday 4 December 2026, when the first candle is lit.
Eighth candle: lit before sundown on Friday 11 December.
Ends: nightfall on Saturday 12 December.
Hebcal also notes that the first and eighth days fall on Shabbat (Saturday 5 and Saturday 12 December). Because Shabbat begins at sundown on Friday, the first candle is lit on Friday evening before Shabbat starts. For a brand, that has two practical consequences:
Gifts for the first night should arrive by Thursday 3 December. A Friday delivery leaves little margin before sundown, and observant families may not handle deliveries over Shabbat. Treat Thursday as your target date and Wednesday as the safe one.
Your order cutoff is earlier than your Christmas cutoff. Work backwards from 3 December using your carrier's transit times and your own warehouse processing time, and publish a specific "order by" date for Hanukkah delivery. Our US holiday shipping cutoffs guide explains how to set and display a delivery promise on Shopify.
The later nights give you more room. A gift for the fifth or sixth night (Tuesday 8 or Wednesday 9 December) can still ship well after Cyber Monday on 30 November, which is a useful message for shoppers who missed the first-night window.
Merchandising for eight nights, not one morning

The Old Farmer's Almanac notes that the traditional Hanukkah gift is gelt, coins often given to children, and that giving a gift on each of the eight nights is "a more recent custom, especially common in North America." Chabad.org describes the custom of parents giving children Chanukah gelt. That shapes demand: many families give a series of smaller gifts, or one larger gift plus small ones across the week, rather than a single big present.
A fashion gift edit can reflect that:
Build a price ladder. Offer plenty of smaller, giftable pieces (socks, hair accessories, scarves, gloves, beanies, jewellery) alongside a few hero items. Shoppers buying for eight nights look for range at the lower end.
Make a "build the week" bundle. A set of three or four coordinated pieces, such as a knit hat, gloves and a scarf in the same colourway, can be given across several nights and still look intentional.
Lead with family and kids' sizes if you carry them. Gelt and gifts are especially associated with children in both sources above, so kids' accessories and matching family pieces fit the occasion.
Show sizes clearly and offer easy exchanges. Gifts bought without the recipient are where sizing goes wrong. Extended exchange windows and clear size guides reduce returns in January. Our guide to holiday returns and January exchanges covers the policy side.
Have a fallback for late shoppers. Gift cards work for any night, and can be sent instantly. See our guide to selling gift cards after the shipping cutoff.
On Shopify, the simplest build is a dedicated "Hanukkah gifts" collection with its own banner and delivery message, filtered to in-stock, giftable items. Keep it separate from your Christmas collection so you can schedule it, message it and measure it on its own dates.
Marketing Hanukkah with care

Hanukkah is a religious festival, and customers notice when brands get it wrong. A few principles keep campaigns accurate and respectful:
Get the dates and spelling right. Use the 2026 dates above, and pick one spelling (Hanukkah or Chanukah) and use it consistently.
Do not treat it as "Jewish Christmas." It is its own festival with its own customs. Avoid copy that frames it as a Christmas equivalent or folds it into Christmas imagery.
Do not use religious symbols as decoration. Keep a menorah or Star of David off product prints, sale badges and discount graphics. Lean on colour, light and winter imagery instead.
Avoid overstating the role of gifts. As the Almanac notes, nightly gift-giving is a more recent custom. Copy such as "gifts for every night" is fine; claiming gifts are the heart of the festival is not.
Mind the timing of sends. With both the first and last days falling on Shabbat this year, Friday evening and Saturday sends will reach some customers when they are offline. If Hanukkah is a focus, schedule key emails and SMS for Wednesday or Thursday.
Let customers opt in. If you segment by holiday, base it on what customers tell you (a preference centre or a quiz), not on guesses from names or locations.
A Hanukkah 2026 checklist for Shopify fashion brands
Publish a Hanukkah "order by" date that delivers by Thursday 3 December.
Create a separate Hanukkah collection with a price ladder and a few coordinated bundles.
Add delivery-promise messaging to the collection banner and product pages.
Schedule campaign sends for midweek, outside Shabbat.
Check every creative for decorative use of religious symbols.
Keep gift cards visible for late shoppers through 12 December.
Extend exchange windows for gifts and make size guides easy to find.
How an AI shopping assistant helps gift shoppers
Gift shoppers arrive with vague briefs: "something for my niece, she is nine, likes purple, under $30, for the third night." Search filters cannot interpret that. An AI shopping assistant can ask a follow-up question, suggest a complete set of pieces from your catalog and explain the delivery date, which is exactly the conversation a good sales associate would have. Industry benchmarks associate AI shopping assistants with 4x conversion rates (Neuwark 2026) and 25% higher average order value (Rep AI 2025); these are industry benchmarks, not Elara results.
Elara for Commerce is an AI shopping assistant built for fashion brands on Shopify. It understands occasion briefs like these, styles complete looks from your catalog, offers virtual try-on and shows occasion insights in the merchant portal, so you can see what shoppers ask for during the holiday season.
FAQ
When is Hanukkah in 2026?
According to Hebcal, Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday 4 December and ends at nightfall on Saturday 12 December.
When should Hanukkah gifts arrive for the first night in 2026?
The first candle is lit on Friday 4 December before Shabbat begins at sundown, so aim for delivery by Thursday 3 December, with Wednesday as a safer target.
Is giving a gift every night of Hanukkah traditional?
The traditional gift is gelt. The Old Farmer's Almanac describes nightly gift-giving as a more recent custom, especially common in North America.
Should fashion brands run a separate Hanukkah campaign?
If you have customers who celebrate, a separate campaign with its own dates, delivery promise and collection serves them better than a general holiday campaign built around 25 December.
Which symbols should brands avoid in Hanukkah marketing?
Avoid using religious symbols such as the menorah or Star of David as decoration on products, sale badges or discount graphics. Accurate dates, respectful copy and seasonal imagery work better.
