Small Business Saturday 2026: A Playbook for Independent Shopify Fashion Brands
Small Business Saturday is November 28 in the US and December 5 in the UK. How independent fashion brands can get listed, build offers that are not just discounts, and run a ten-day story-led plan.
Mehul Agarwal, Founder & CEO

Quick answer: Small Business Saturday 2026 is Saturday, November 28 in the US, the day after Black Friday, and Saturday, December 5 in the UK. For an independent Shopify fashion brand, it is the one day in Cyber Week built around who you are rather than how deep your discount is. Get listed on the free directories, plan an offer that is not just a price cut (a limited drop, a gift with purchase, free alterations or a styling session), and run a short story-led email and social plan in the ten days before.
Black Friday rewards the biggest discounts and the biggest ad budgets. Most independent fashion brands cannot win that fight, and many do not want to train customers to wait for 40% off. Small Business Saturday gives you a different frame: shoppers are actively looking for independent businesses to support, and your founder story, your makers and your small-batch production become the reason to buy.
This playbook covers the dates, the free programmes worth signing up for, offers that protect margin, and a ten-day plan you can run alongside your main BFCM calendar. If you have not locked your site down for peak week yet, start with our BFCM 2026 site readiness checklist.
What Small Business Saturday is, and when it falls in 2026
Small Business Saturday was created by American Express and first held in the US on November 27, 2010. It falls on the Saturday after US Thanksgiving, which puts it on Saturday, November 28, 2026, between Black Friday (November 27) and Cyber Monday (November 30).
The UK has its own Small Business Saturday, which started in 2013. In 2026 it falls on Saturday, December 5, a week later than the US date. If you sell in both markets, you get two moments instead of one.
Get listed: the free programmes worth signing up for

Both campaigns offer support for small businesses. Details below are from the organisers' own sites as of October 2026; check eligibility for your business before relying on them.
US: American Express Shop Small
Shop Small Map, including an online directory. Qualifying businesses can be listed and recommended to American Express Card Members at no cost. Online-only merchants are eligible for the online directory section, which matters for Shopify brands without a shopfront.
Free marketing materials. The Shop Small Resource Hub offers downloadable social posts, printable signage and email templates. You only pay if you print them.
Eligibility. The published criteria include being based in the US, staying under set limits on annual American Express charge volume and number of locations, and accepting American Express directly rather than only through some third-party aggregators. Read the current criteria on the American Express site before you plan around a listing.
UK: Small Business Saturday UK
Marketing pack. Logos, social media assets and campaign materials are available to download from the campaign site.
Small Biz 100. Selected small businesses are featured across the campaign's social media and PR. Check the campaign site for how and when to apply.
Build an offer that is not just a discount

Independent fashion brands usually lose a pure discount war. Small Business Saturday is the day to lead with things a large retailer cannot easily copy:
A limited Saturday drop. A small run of a sell-out style, a new colourway or an offcut capsule released only on the day. Scarcity is real when you produce in small batches.
A gift with purchase. A scarf, a pouch made from offcuts or a care kit above a set order value. It protects your headline price and raises order value.
Free alterations or hemming for local customers, or a credit toward a tailor.
Personalisation. Monogramming, embroidery or a handwritten note from the founder.
A styling session. Fifteen minutes with your team, in person or on video, to build a look from your collection.
Local pickup and same-day delivery if you have a studio or warehouse nearby.
Pick one main offer and one supporting perk. More than that dilutes the message.
A ten-day content and email plan

Run this alongside your main BFCM promotions, not instead of them. Dates below are for the US; shift them a week later for the UK.
Thursday, November 19: introduce the story. An email and social post about who makes your clothes and why you produce the way you do. No offer yet.
Saturday, November 21: show the people. Behind-the-scenes content from your studio, workshop or makers.
Tuesday, November 24: announce the Saturday offer. Explain the drop or the perk and why it only happens on Small Business Saturday.
Thursday, November 26: Thanksgiving. Keep it light: a thank-you note to customers, with a reminder of Saturday.
Friday, November 27: Black Friday. Run your main BFCM plan. Mention Saturday as "tomorrow" for subscribers who prefer to shop small.
Saturday, November 28: go live. Morning launch email, a midday reminder with what is selling, and an evening last-call.
Monday, November 30: Cyber Monday. Return to your main plan, and thank Saturday's customers separately.
For UK brands, the December 5 date lands after Cyber Monday, which makes it a useful second peak when inboxes have calmed down.
Make the small-brand experience visible on your store
Shoppers who come to you on Small Business Saturday want to feel the difference from a big marketplace. Make it obvious on the site:
A founder's picks collection with a short note on why each piece is there.
Maker and material details on product pages: where it was made, the fabric, how many were produced.
Real styling help. Shoppers discovering a small brand often want advice on what goes with what. That can be a person on chat during peak hours, an occasion edit, or an AI shopping assistant made for fashion that builds complete looks from your catalog. As industry benchmarks, Neuwark (2026) reports a 4x conversion rate for shoppers who use AI shopping assistants and Rep AI (2025) reports 25% higher average order value; treat these as directional, not a promise for your store.
Clear holiday returns and exchanges, so first-time customers feel safe buying from a brand they have just discovered.
For the longer game, our guide to building a fashion brand community covers how to turn Saturday's new customers into repeat buyers.
