Christmas Gift Orders on Shopify: Wrap, Messages and Gift Receipts

How to set up gift wrap as a product, capture gift messages, print packing slips without prices and give gift recipients an easy exchange this Christmas.

Mehul Agarwal, Founder & CEO

Quick answer: To handle Christmas 2026 gift orders well on Shopify, set up gift wrap as its own product with a variant per tier, collect the gift message in the cart note or an order attribute, and edit your packing slip so gift orders print the message and no prices. For returns, remember the person unwrapping the parcel is not your customer: give them a way to exchange, and send any refund to the buyer. Shopify POS can print gift receipts for in-store orders; for online orders, a price-free packing slip with the order number and exchange instructions does the same job.

From late November to Christmas Eve, many fashion orders go to someone other than the buyer. That changes three things that rarely matter the rest of the year: how the parcel looks when it is opened, what paperwork is inside it, and what happens when the sweater is the wrong size. Brands that treat a gift order like any other order risk printing the price on the slip, losing the gift message between checkout and the packing bench, and leaving the recipient with no easy way to swap sizes.

This playbook walks through the setup on Shopify, drawing on Shopify's own guidance on gift wrapping and on Shopify POS receipts, and on how UK return rights work for gifts. It pairs with our holiday returns and January exchanges playbook, which covers what happens after Christmas.

1. Sell gift wrap as a product

Three gift wrap tiers: a scarf in tissue with a seal, a cream gift box and a green box tied with lilac ribbon

Shopify's enterprise guide to gift wrapping recommends the simplest setup that works on every plan: create a "Gift wrapping" product with one variant per tier, mark it as not requiring shipping, and add it to the cart page as a product block or button. Because it is a normal line item, it flows through payments, reporting and fulfilment without any extra tools.

A few details make it work in practice:

  • Tiers that match your packaging. For example, a tissue-and-sticker tier, a branded box tier, and a premium box with ribbon. Keep each tier tied to one standard box size so packers never improvise.

  • Price it from real costs. The same Shopify guide suggests pricing at materials plus labour plus a 10% buffer, with labour based on your fully loaded hourly wage.

  • Wrap one item, not the whole order. If a customer wants only one piece wrapped, Shopify's guide suggests line-item properties, such as a "Wrap this item only" option on the product.

  • Consider a threshold offer. Free basic wrap above a set order value is a way to nudge order value without discounting the clothes themselves.

If you are on Shopify Plus, checkout extensibility lets you offer wrap inside checkout as well; otherwise, gift wrap apps can add the option to product pages and the cart.

2. Capture the gift message where packers will see it

The gift message is the part most often lost. Shopify's guide suggests enabling the cart note and relabelling it "Add a gift message (optional)," or storing the message as an order attribute, so it travels with the order to fulfilment.

  • Keep it in one field. If messages arrive in three places (cart note, a product property and customer emails), packers will miss some. Pick one.

  • Set a character limit that fits your card, and say so next to the box.

  • Print it, do not hand-copy it. Pull the message onto the packing slip or a separate card template so it is reproduced exactly.

  • Tag gift orders automatically. Shopify's guide recommends flagging gift-wrap orders with tags; a Shopify Flow rule that tags any order containing the gift wrap product, or with a cart note, gives your team a filtered queue.

3. Print a packing slip without prices

A gift that arrives with the price on the paperwork undoes the effort of wrapping it. Shopify's guide says to customise the packing slip template so gift orders show the message and hide all prices, and to check on every wrapped order that prices really are hidden.

Shopify packing slips are customised with Liquid, according to Shopify's help center, so a developer or a confident merchant can add a condition: if the order contains the gift wrap product or has a gift note, print the message and leave out line prices and totals. Test it on a real draft order before the rush, and keep a printed sample at the packing bench so packers know what a correct gift slip looks like.

4. Gift receipts, exchanges and who gets the refund

In store. Shopify's help center says Shopify POS can print a gift receipt, which leaves out the amount paid, either from the payment screen or later from the order. It is printed only, needs a receipt printer, and covers the whole order; for a gift receipt for one item, Shopify says to create a separate order for that item. If you run a holiday pop-up, train staff to offer it at the till.

Online. Shopify's POS gift receipt is not described as available for online orders, so the practical option is to use the price-free packing slip as the gift receipt. Make sure it includes the order number, the item names and sizes, and one line on how the recipient can exchange.

Who has the rights. In the UK, the rights to return generally stay with the buyer, not the recipient, according to Saga's guide to returning unwanted presents. For online purchases, the buyer has 14 days to tell the retailer they want to cancel and another 14 days to send the item back, and refunds usually go to the card used to pay. That is why an exchange route for the recipient matters: a size swap or store credit lets them fix the fit without involving the buyer. Saga notes that large UK retailers have offered extended Christmas return windows in past years; if you offer one, state the dates clearly on the gift slip and in your Google Merchant Center return policy, which our holiday return policy guide covers.

5. Set up the packing bench before the rush

Shopify's gift wrapping guide recommends separate zones for picking, wrapping and final packing, pre-cut paper and ribbon for common items, labelled bins for each tier's materials, and standard box sizes per tier. It also lists a final check for every wrapped order: neat wrap, the right tier, the right message, no prices, and a carton that stays within carrier size limits.

That last check matters more for gift boxes, which add bulk. The same guide notes that USPS applies dimensional weight above 1 cubic foot, that UPS adds handling charges for long, heavy or irregular packages, and that Royal Mail's large letter size requires items under 13 x 10 x 1 inches. A rigid gift box can push a parcel into a higher price band, so pick wrap tiers that still fit your usual cartons.

If you ship gift orders internationally, build the extra handling time into the cut-off dates you show customers. Our US holiday shipping cut-offs playbook covers how to set them.

FAQ

How do I add gift wrapping to my Shopify store?

Shopify's own guidance is to create a "Gift wrapping" product with a variant for each tier, mark it as not requiring shipping, and add it to the cart page. It works on every plan, and apps or Plus checkout extensions can add more options.

How do I add a gift message box to the Shopify cart?

Enable the cart note and relabel it as a gift message, or store the message as an order attribute, so it reaches fulfilment. Then print it on the packing slip or a card template.

Can Shopify print gift receipts?

Shopify POS can print gift receipts that hide the amount paid, for whole orders, with a receipt printer. For online orders, a customised packing slip with no prices does the same job.

How do I hide prices on Shopify packing slips?

Customise the packing slip template, which uses Liquid, to leave out prices when an order is a gift, for example when it contains the gift wrap product or a gift note. Check every gift order before it ships.

Who gets the refund if a gift recipient returns an item?

Usually the buyer. In the UK, return rights generally stay with the purchaser and online refunds go back to the original card. Offer recipients an exchange or store credit so they can fix the size without involving the giver.
